Dry Needling/IMS
Dry Needling/IMS
Dry needling, performed by a licensed Physiotherapist, is a safe and effective treatment method designed to alleviate pain and muscle tension while enhancing mobility. This technique has demonstrated efficacy in addressing a wide array of musculoskeletal conditions, including acute and chronic injuries, overuse injuries, neck pain, headaches, back pain, sciatica, muscle spasms, strains, tendinitis, knee and hip pain, fibromyalgia, as well as conditions like tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow.
Dry needling is a treatment technique utilized by our licensed Physiotherapists to alleviate pain. During this procedure, a sterile acupuncture needle is inserted through the skin into the affected tendons, ligaments, or muscles to alleviate pain, decrease muscle tension, and enhance mobility.
It’s important to clarify that dry needling differs from acupuncture. While there may be similarities, dry needling is rooted in modern scientific understanding of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine principles, dry needling strictly adheres to Western medicine principles and research. By creating an environment that promotes the body’s natural healing mechanisms, dry needling effectively reduces pain and facilitates recovery.
Does it Hurt?
Most of our patients report minimal discomfort during dry needling treatments. Our highly-trained physiotherapists prioritize ensuring the process is as painless as possible. However, some individuals may experience a “twitch response” upon needle insertion, akin to a brief muscle cramp or ache. It’s worth noting that in the 24-48 hours following treatment, muscle soreness may occur, but this typically resolves on its own. At-home remedies such as applying ice or heat packs and staying hydrated can help alleviate any soreness.
Will this Therapy benefit me ?
Dry needling has been found to benefit individuals with a wide range of musculoskeletal issues. When combined with our traditional exercise-based physiotherapy treatments and advanced manual therapy techniques, we have observed that the majority of our patients achieve their pain-free goals.
Following a thorough evaluation to understand the nature of your condition, our physiotherapist will determine if dry needling is the most appropriate treatment for you. We have successfully utilized dry needling to address various conditions, including chronic pain and delayed onset muscle soreness experienced by athletes.
